Gordon McQueen talking about Scottish players switching to Eire
|
He must be fucking pissed:
Former Scotland defender Gordon McQueen has branded Everton players James McCarthy and Aiden McGeady as traitors over their decision to represent the Republic of Ireland, who come to Glasgow for a vital Euro 2016 qualifying tie on Friday.
The former Leeds United and Manchester United star is appalled that Glaswegian McCarthy and former Celtic winger McGeady, who was born in Denny, did not wish to wear the dark blue shirt.
“I hate that: I’ve got no time for these players,” he said. “You’re born in Glasgow but then you go and play for somebody else? What’s that all about? I’m not having that at all.
“Will it be hard for them coming back here with Ireland? I really hope so. I hope they get a horrible reception because they deserve it. I’m sure somebody must have asked them to play or Scotland at some stage.
“You’re either Scottish or you’re not Scottish and you should know that by the time you’re 12 years of age.
“I played alongside the likes of Bob Wilson and Bruce Rioch, who were born in England but they always considered themselves Scottish.
“That’s all I want. If you feel Scottish then you’re Scottish but I hate these guys who think: I can’t get a game for England so I’ll play for Scotland’.”
So on the one hand he has a go at Scottish born players turning out for Ireland, but then says players born in England playing for Scotland is OK if they 'feel' Scottish.
Must've been at the meths again. Lovely daughter, though.

Eggbert, agreed. Rugby and cricket even worse.
IMHO the rot set in in football when Wales started picking players who were British but born outside the UK and could choose any of the four countries, while whining that they feared for the future of their national status. Fine if they did have some connection with Wales but many didn't.

to be fair it' s not just football, half the rugby and cricket players don't really come from who they play for nowadays either

Most of that great Eire team under Jack Charlton in the late eighties and early nineties were not born in Ireland.
Aldridge, Houghton, Townsend, McCarthy, Cascarino to name a few.
Northern Ireland lost 2 or 3 players to the Republic be cause they obviously thought they would get more success by swapping.
What annoys me now is that a player can play a few friendlies for one country and still qualify to play for another.
Only the other week they were suggesting Sakho could still play for France as he has only played in 2 friendlies for Senegal.
I understand players want to play in the World Cup but for me swapping your countries should not be an option.
Makes me laugh when the likes of Viera & Desailly used to go on about how proud they were of there senegalese roots but as soon as France called they were quick to fuck off.

International football has screwed itself by relaxing nationality rules so the 20th best midfielder in Brazil etc can play for some European side. It's practically a transfer market.

If I'd been good enough to play international football for Ireland like Noble but not good enough for England then I'd play for them. It's his job and something he loves doing I,e, playing football. Of you have the potential opportunity to go to the World Cuo you take it.

Mark Noble said a couple of months ago his agent had talked to Martin O'Neill about playing for Ireland but I haven't heard any more since. I expect Rodfarts is up to speed on this one.

Agree completely. I can't understand the idea that you would have grown up wanting to represent your country, probably played at various age groups and then all of a sudden represent a different country just like that. Seems completely wrong to me.

By the age of 12, you'd have a pretty good grasp on where you live. Announcing you're Irish at 25 has nothing to do with nationality, it's pure opportunism.

At 12? Come on! Different if you're 25 and suddenly announce you're Irish but give a kid a break.
I don't understand why anyone would announce they're Irish though.

I hope the press have misrepresented what he's said because what's written and alleged to have been said by him is absolute crack pottery!
I like Gordon McQueen and miss him covering the Saturday games.

But if Aiden McGeady 'feels' like a Paddy, then McQueen shouldn't have a problem with him playing for Ireland. Bloody weird.

It wasn't as either McCarthy or McGeady weren't going to get picked for Scotland though is its..
They have their own reasons like heritage etc.
Terry butcher was the same ..

IMHO most of these English born players who opt to play for another country do so because they're not up to out international standard.
